Tucson is a city in the US state of Arizona. As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of over 54,000. It also seat of Pima County. It is also the largest city in the state. Tucson has several incorporated suburbs, including Marana, Sahuarita, South Tucson, and Oro Valley.
Tucson´s name is a Spanish derivative, which means ‘base of the black hill’, which is a reference to a volcanic mountain adjacent to it. The city also has several nicknames including ‘Optics Valley’, ‘The Old Peublo’, and ‘The Sunshine Factory’.
The economy of the city is largely centered around the University of Arizona, which is the second biggest employer in the city. The Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, is also another big employer in Tucson. The US Army Intelligence Center, also located in Tucson, has helped the city develop high tech industries.
Another major industry in Tucson is tourism. It is a $2 billion a year industry and brings in million of tourists from all over the US and the world.
