Tokyo is a Japanese prefecture located in the region of Kanto on the island of Honshu. It is one of the largest cities in Japan and as of a 2009 estimate, there are over 12 million people in Tokyo. The prefecture belongs to the Greater Tokyo Area, which is a metropolitan area with over 35 million inhabitants making it the largest metropolitan economy in the world. Locally, Tokyo also serves as the seat of Japanese government.

Tokyo is ranked as an alpha+ world city by the GaWC. It has also been described as of the top economic and cultural centers in the world. In 2009, the Mercer Human Resource Consulting dubbed Tokyo as being the most expensive city in the world. It has also been named the most livable city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The city has a very diverse economy and has a thriving service, technologic, and manufacturing industry. The city also thrives on tourism.
