It was incorporated as a town in 1982. Shannon is accessible via the N19 and N18 road located between Ennis and Limerick City.
The town is serviced by the newly constructed Shannon Airport. It sits on reclaimed marshland. Shannon was initially intended to serve as home for those who will be working at the airport.
A bypass of Newmarket on Fergus helped increase the population in Shannon. Modern housing started to be constructed and the town´s facilities also improved. As of a 2006 census estimate, the city has a population of over 9,000.
The town enjoys a healthy tourism industry. People are attracted to it because of its proximity to the Shannon Airport. It also has several tourist resorts including the Bunratty Castle and Folk Park.
