A major seaport and a coastal city located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, situated in west Washington State in an isthmus between Lake Washington and the Pacific ocean´s Puget Sound and Lake Washington ninety six miles south of the United States-Canadian border. Seattle is named after Chief Sealth, of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes. Major cultural, education and economical centers are in Seattle and it is currently the County of King County. It has a municipal population of 602,000 making it the 25th most populated city of the United States. It has a metro area population of approximately 3,344,813. The Tacoma, Seattle and Bellevue metro statistics area is the fifteenth largest in the United States. The Seattle area has been inhabited for about four thousand years although settlement by Europeans only started in the middle nineteenth century. Seattle is frequently referred to as the ‘Gateway to Alaska’, ‘Rain City’ and ‘Jet City’ due to the influence of Boeing. Seattleites are what the residents of Seattle are called.
