California´s capital and the county seat of Sacramento County, Sacramento is located along Sacramento River and just south where the American River meets California´s expansive Central Valley. Estimated at approximately 460,242 inhabitants in 2007, it is the 7th largest city in California. Sacramento is the cultural economic hub of the Sacramento Metropolitan Area which includes Placer, Sacramento, El Dorado and Yolo with a combined population of about 2,136,604. Cited as the most livable region in America in 2004, Sacramento was cited by Time Magazine as the most integrated in its 2002 issue. Sacramento was a major distribution point in the Gold Rush and a terminal for riverboats, stagecoaches, wagon trains, the telegraph, the Pony Express and the First Continental Railroad. The oldest part of the town is Old Sacramento beside Sutters Fort. Old Sacramento consists of cobbled streets and some historic buildings which have been restored, preserved or reconstructed. The district is now a substantial tourist spot with rides on paddle streamers and steam-hauled historic trains.
