The metropolitan area of Rome is estimated to be 3.7 million. Rome is located on the Tiber River in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula.

Its history reaches as far back as over 2.5 thousand years ago as one of the founders of Western Civilization. As the present day home of the Roman Catholic Church, Rome plays quite a significant role in Christianity and is the site of the Vatican City, which is an independent city-state run by the Catholic Church. Central Rome remains essentially Baroque and Renaissance in character, proof that is was one of the few main cities in Europe that had escaped World War II. In the European Union, it is the 3rd most visited tourist destination and is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
