Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands and is a popular vacation spot, having drawn to its shores more or less 3 million tourists a year. The island, which is divided into 14 cities and small towns, is also popularly called the “Valley Isle” due to the huge isthmus connecting its southeastern and northwestern volcanoes.

There are a lot of things to do in Maui other than the usual beach activities. The best way to view the entire island is to take a trip to Haleakala National Park, which is also home to the dormant volcano, Haleakala. The park´s summit gives a view of Maui´s sandy beaches and green rainforests along with a stunning view of five of the eight major Hawaiian Islands.

Located on the eastern coast of the island is Hana Highway that curves around black sand beaches, lush greenery and waterfalls. Maui is famous for its sunset and is also an impressive site for whale watching in Hawaii as Humpback whales shelter in the island´s ´Au´au Channel during winter. Nature hikes along the island´s numerous trails that lead to impressive mountain vistas is also a good recreation activity in Maui.

Maui´s Lahaina is famous for shopping and dining as it has an entire street filled with shops and stores. Other places of interest in the island include the Sugar Cane Train, 'Iao Valley State Park and Wainapanapa State Park.
