Kauai is the oldest main island and one of the favorite destinations in the island of Hawaii. It is popularly known as the “Garden Isle” and is composed of six towns among them is Lihu`e, Po`ipu and Princeville. The island is known for its rural and laid-back appearance, in contrast to other Hawaiian islands like Oahu or Maui, where big resorts and swanky hotels are located.
This oldest main island in Hawaii will enamor any nature lover as it is naturally adorned with bays, beaches, cliffs and ravines. Aptly called the “Island of Discovery,” other than miles of sandy white beaches, Kauai also has other wondrous natural features. The island is home to the so-called “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” the Waimea Canyon. It is also the only island in Hawaii that is gifted with navigable rivers including the Wailua River, which is popular for kayaking. Also found in the island are 3000-foot cliffs on Na Pali coast, which are best viewed by taking a helicopter ride.
Other destinations that are worth visiting in Kauai include the Hanalei, Haena, Hanapepe and Kilauea. Hanalei is the home of the famous Hanalei Bay while those who want to head for the Na Pali Coast will have to go by Haena. Other attractions to see include the Lydgate State Park, Old Koloa Town and the Huleia National Wildlife Refuge.
