Indianapolis is located in the US state of Indiana. It serves as Indiana´s capital and it is also the seat of Marion County. The city, nicknamed ‘Indy’, ‘The Circle City’, and ‘Naptown’, was established in 1821. A 2008 census estimated that the city has a population exceeding 800,000 making it the largest in Indiana and one of the largest cities in the US.

The city has a diverse economy with industries including healthcare, education, manufacturing, finance and government. Indianapolis also has a blossoming tourist industry and it hosts several sporting events and conventions. The Indianapolis 500 or the Indy 500 is perhaps the most notable annual sporting event to occur in the city. The Allstate 400 at the Brickyard and the NCAA basketball tournaments have also been held in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis also serves as a cultural center. It has several Cultural Districts including Massachusetts Avenue, Broad Ripple Village, Fountain Square, Indiana Avenue, Canal and White River State Park, and the Wholesale District.
