Detroit is the state of Michigan´s largest city – it is also the only major US city which looks south to Canada. Being a booming city, it is considered to be the eleventh of the country´s most populous cities. It is also the considered to be the world´s traditional automotive center so that it is also nicknamed as "Motown" – short for Motor Town – and "The Motor City".

The city´s name was taken from the river Detroit which meant "le détroit du Lac Érie" or "the strait of Lake Erie". Like most urban cities in the country, the architecture of Detroit is diverse – from traditional to Gothic to neo-classical to modern to post-modern.

Detroit is also home to various neighborhoods belonging to the National Register of Historic Places. Attractions in the area include the Palace of Auburn Hills, the Detroit Opera House, Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Science Center, Dossin Great Lakes Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD).
