Charleston is city in Charleston County, South Carolina – it is also the largest and is the county seat. It was once known as Charles Towne or Charlestown, Carolina. The city has a low skyline which is often dotted by steeples of various churches which led to it being called as "The Holy City". Other names for the city include "The Palmetto City", "Chucktown" and "Carolopolis".

In 1995, Charleston was also named as the "best-mannered city" by Marjabelle Young Stewart. The city´s motto is "Aedes Mores Juraque Curat" which means "She cares for her temples, customs, and rights". The city has been a subject and setting to numerous literary pieces.

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is among its popular landmarks and tourist attractions; the bridge is the longest of the cable-stayed bridges in the Western Hemisphere. Other attractions include the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Gov. William Aiken House, the Charleston Museum, and the Market Hall and Sheds.
