Anchorage, located in South Central Alaska, is the largest city in Alaska. Since it is located farther north from Oslo and Stockholm, Anchorage enjoys a subarctic climate with relatively short, cool summers.
The city is known mainly for its diverse wildlife population that exists within the city and the surrounding areas. In fact, black bears, grizzly bears and moose are regularly sighted within the city limits. Dall sheep, wolves, beavers and foxes also frequent the area while whales are commonly sighted along Turnagain Arm.
Every year, on the first Saturday of March, the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race kicks off from Fourth Avenue. The race, also known as “The Iditarod,” is noted as the most famous and the longest sled dog race in the world. The city also hosts the Fur Rendezvous Open World Championship Sled Dog Races.
Aside from its rich wildlife, other attractions in Anchorage include the Kincaid Park, Earthquake Park, Alpenglow Ski Area, Hilltop Ski Area, Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Alaska Native Heritage Center, Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and Alaska Botanical Garden.
